LessonSketch Library Privacy Policy

This privacy policy governs your use of the LessonSketch Library owned by The Regents of the University of Michigan. The library includes interactive multimedia experiences such as animations, storyboards, and annotated storyboards, and provides opportunities for users to annotate media.

The University of Michigan (U-M) privacy statement recognizes the value of the privacy of the university community members and its guests.

This privacy notice provides more specific information on how the LessonSketch Library https://www.lessonsketch.org/ collects and processes your personal information.

What information does the library App obtain and how is it used?

User Provided Information – The library obtains the information you provide when you create an account with the University of Michigan’s Canvas portal to access and operate on the library materials. This process of signing up is required in order to be able to access Canvas. When you sign up, you generally provide your name, email address, user name, and password. We may also use the information you provided us to contact you from time to time to provide you with updates on library materials, required notices, promotions, and any other important information. In this Canvas portal, certain survey forms may request your name, email address, and professional affiliation. This information is collected solely to help us better understand and improve your user experience. We will not disclose your information publicly on our website without your permission. We may also collect your submissions, such as questions, comments, news items, and interests, and use them to improve user experience and to document the use of the materials. In any public documentation of the use of provided materials, such as research publications or technical reports, your identity and personal information will never be shared.

You may choose not to enter personal information into our website. You can change email and communication preferences by clicking on the Unsubscribe or Manage Your Preferences links at the bottom of any email from us and unchecking the relevant boxes.

We may use your personal information in our applications such as Anotemos and LessonDepict and share it with external service providers that support business activities. The key service providers we use are Google, MailChimp, and Qualtrics. We strive to ensure that these service providers keep your personal information secure and not use or share it for any purpose other than providing services on our behalf.

Automatically Collected Information – In addition, to improve the quality of future versions of the Library, we may collect certain information automatically, such as the type of device you use, your device’s unique ID, the IP address of your device, your operating system, the type of Internet browsers you use, date and time of visit, address of the website from which the visitor has accessed this site, and information about the way you use the library (content used, amount of time spent, etc.). Cookies may be placed on your computer or device depending on your browser settings.

We use third-party advertising and marketing providers such as Google Analytics to automatically collect and store information about your visit. Information collected through these partners may include date/time of visit, pages viewed, time on pages/site, visitor location, visitor device information (device type, operating system, browser used), visitor language, visitor flow/navigation through site, visitor age, visitor gender, visitor acquisition (where they came from: direct, referral, social, paid search, organic search).

We do not collect precise information about the exact location of your mobile device, but approximate location from IP may be collected for analytics purposes.

We may disclose User Provided and Automatically Collected Information as required by law or to comply with legal obligations, institutional reporting requirements, or similar legal processes; when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights or the rights, property, and safety of you or others; to investigate fraud or respond to a government request; and with our trusted service providers who work on our behalf, do not have an independent use of the information we disclose to them, and have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in this Privacy Policy.

If LessonSketch is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of its assets, or if there are organizational or administrative changes within the University of Michigan that result in a different unit assuming responsibility for LessonSketch, you will be notified via email and/or a prominent notice on our website of any change in ownership, management, or use of this information, as well as any choices you may have regarding this information.

Automated Collection: Social Media PluginsOur site may use social media sharing buttons. Social media platforms may use cookies or other tracking technologies when a button is embedded on our website. LessonSketch does not have access to or control over any information collected through these buttons or third-party cookie behavior. The social media platforms are responsible for how they use your information.

You can manage or opt out of targeted advertising from these companies by adjusting your cookie preferences or visiting their individual opt-out pages. You can also use a general cookie-preference tool such as the Your Online Choices (EU) or the Network Advertising Initiative Opt-Out Page (US). Please note that opting out only prevents targeted advertising; you may still see generic (non-targeted) ads after opting out.

We will retain User Provided Data for as long as you use the Library and for a reasonable time thereafter, in accordance with applicable University of Michigan data retention and privacy policies. If you would like us to delete User Provided Data that you have provided, please contact us at [email protected], and we will respond within a reasonable time. Please note that some or all of the User Provided Data may be necessary for the Library to function properly, and we may be required to retain certain information as mandated by law or University policy.

We do not use the Library to knowingly solicit data from or market to children under the age of 13. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that their child has provided us with information without their consent, they should contact us at [email protected], and we will delete such information from our files within a reasonable time. LessonSketch is not intended to collect or maintain student education records as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), for students of any age.

Security – We are committed to safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect the information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know it in order to operate, develop, or improve our Library. Our security practices align with the University of Michigan information security standards and safe computing policies.

Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for the information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.

Data Breach Notification – In the event of a security incident that compromises personal information, the University of Michigan will follow its established incident-response and breach-notification procedures. Where required by law, we will notify affected individuals and appropriate authorities as soon as practicable after becoming aware of the breach.

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. The effective date of the current version will be posted at the top of this page. We will notify you of any material changes to our Privacy Policy by updating the posted effective date and providing notice through email and/or a prominent banner on our website. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about any updates.

By using the Services, you consent to our processing of User Provided and Automatically Collected information as described in this Privacy Policy, now and as amended by us. “Processing” means using cookies on a computer or handheld device, or using or handling information in any way, including, but not limited to, collecting, storing, deleting, using, combining, and disclosing information. All such processing activities take place in the United States. If you reside outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to the U.S. and processed and stored there under U.S. privacy standards.
